Abhyanga Cikitsa: Self Oil Massage
“Anointing the body with oil imparts a glossy softness to the skin, guards against
the aggravation of Vata and Kapha, improves color and strength, and tones
the tissues of the body.”
Sushruta Chikitsa
Abhyanga pacifies Vata dosha, decreasing stiffness, aches and pains. It nourishes the skin, tissues, and nervous system, helps sleep patterns and decreases the effects of aging. Abhyanga reduces inflammation, and has antimicrobial/anti-cancer effect on the skin. It will improve circulation and promote healing. Abhyanga keeps muscles, joints, tendons, etc. well lubricated and flexible, so they’re less likely to become injured.
Indications:
Increased Vata Dosha, Dry rough skin, Stress, anxiety, insomnia, Fatigue or weakness, Joint stiffness, Degenerative arthritis, osteoporosis, Sciatica, and general nerve pain
Contraindications:
Swelling, broken skin, severe rash, High Ama (thick white coating on tongue), Acute fever, chills, or flu,Acute Indigestion, After eating, Menstruation, Pregnancy, Chemotherapy
How to apply:
Place oil in a small bowl (not plastic), then place this bowl into a larger bowl holding hot water—this will warm the oil. Under your feet, lay out an old towel. Apply oil to the body starting at the periphery and moving toward the heart. Use long strokes on the straight bones, and circular motion on the joints. One you have covered the entire body with oil, you can do a few minutes of stretches or to give additional massage to any tense areas.
Then take a reasonably hot shower, continuing to rub the oil in. The heat from the shower will open the pores and facilitate absorption. Most of the oil will be rinsed off simply with the water, so there is no need for soap except on any "strategic areas" (ie underarms, feet, groin). Finish by pat drying with a designated “oil towel” which should be washed separately from your normal laundry.
Which oil should I use?
Sesame oil is considered the “king of oils” and is often the best choice for Abhyanga. If excessive internal heat is a problem, consider using Sunflower oil. In the summertime, Coconut oil can balance the effects of hot weather and sun exposure. One can also use a Vata, Pitta, or Kapha oils if one already knows their vikruti (doshic imbalance). Mahanarayan oil is a classic formulation ideal for muscle pain, soft tissue damage, and arthritis.
